Your Question Answered

On occasion, I have employees and customers that improperly identify slide films as print films. This of course creates problems. How can I educate my employees and customers on how to identify slide films made by 3M?

As a consumer purchasing film at a retail outlet, the box the film is contained in is the only means by which the film type can be identified. The 3M slide film box has printed on it a number of pieces of information that indicate that this is a slide film.

The product name on the box is "ScotchChrome" and on the bottom of the box front panel, the product is listed as "35mm Film for Color Slides" in blue lettering. The speed of the film is also printed in blue whereas 3M color print films do not use blue numbers or letters. The slide film box also has silver bars on the box front panel, color print film does not. (Pictured below.)

Once the film is removed from the box and inner plastic container, the film may be identified by the information printed on the metal film cartridge. The slide film cartridge has a 1/2" X 1 1/2" blue panel at the edge of the felt lips.

Name, color, lettering and numbers can help customers identify scotch color slide films from print films.

This blue panel contains the number of exposures, film speed DX designator and process designator, which for color slide films is "E6." Color print films have a "Process C-41" process designator. Immediately next to the blue panel is a narrow white strip with "CS" along with the number of exposures and film speed. The "CS" designates the film as "Color Slide" film. The cartridge has the name "ScotchChrome" printed on it with the "Chrome" portion printed in blue lettering. The cartridge also has the distinctive silver bars with the lower bar containing the words "Slide Film." (Pictured below.)

After the film is properly processed, the 3M slide film may be identified by its distinctive blue dots on the top edge of the film (one dot between each sprocket hole). The name "Scotch" will also appear on the top edge. Under some circumstances, such as processing the slide film in the C-41 process rather than the E6 process, a situation could arise where an operator needs to be able to identify the film. This may be accomplished by inspecting the bottom edge of the film. A machine readable DX code will be found on the bottom edge of the 3M color print films, whereas 3M color slide films do not have a machine readable DX code anywhere on the film. (Pictured right.)

Baccalaureate Imaging Programs

Offered by SCSU and RIT Represent Opportunities for Photo Industry Employers and Aspiring Employees

The Imaging Engineering Technology program at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota (SCSU) and the Imaging Systems Management program at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York (RIT) are the only two programs in the nation offering Bachelor of Science degrees in photographic and imaging technology. The programs in both schools have been preparing individuals for this industry for over 25 years. Each has an outstanding placement record; 100% of the students graduating from the programs find jobs! The reason? Both offer top quality education programs in the imaging field, both supply the industry with highly qualified candidates for available positions.

SCSU and RIT have advisory committees consisting of industry members which monitor the curriculum and recommend changes which reflect the evolution and direction of the industry. Both have curriculums which reflect the changes in the industry towards electronic imaging.

Photo Industry employers looking for baccalaureate degree personnel to fill available entry level or other positions should look first to these two schools. Both schools have placement organizations which will assist the prospective employer in all facets of the search process. This includes the supply of lists and files of potential candidates and assistance with the interview process. They will also supply a list of those orga-nizations which have employed individuals from the school.

Those already in the industry who wish to enhance their career prospects should also consider the two schools. Graduates find careers in management, quality assurance, marketing, product development, sales, training, technical service and other job categories in the photographic and imaging industry.
